Holy ****. Finding this brand of ice cream was a day that forever changed my life. Okay maybe I’m exaggerating a bit but seriously, what a magnificent find. Protein ice cream that averages between 320-400 calories per pint with ~30g protein and ~20g fiber, AND it actually tastes somewhat like real ice cream with real mix-ins? Like Arctic Zero though, does the near unbelievable nutritional profile sound too good to be true while still trying to make good tasting ice cream? Out of all the flavors to choose from, I dove on into the Enlightened peanut butter chocolate chip flavor first to find out.
Enlightened Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Review
It’s not. This is the real deal folks. My mind was continuing to get more and more blown with each bite as I realized that this indeed was not a dream and that a healthy version of ‘ice cream’ was actually tasting this good. I swear I did multiple double-takes at the nutrition facts throughout the process of eating it just to make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me. For peanut butter lovers, you will absolutely love the Enlightened peanut butter flavor and it truly is a dream come true. The peanut butter taste is very strong but it’s a natural peanut buttery taste and not very artificial/chemical tasting. The actual chocolate chips mix-ins aren’t very big, but there is a decent amount of them that add a nice crunch to change up the texture of the smoother ice cream. It was kind of hard to tell because I ate it so fast, but I believe there was small peanut butter chunks mixed in throughout the pint as well. They weren’t huge and since the peanut butter based ice cream is so strong already they don’t do an anything really extreme with the flavor, but I definitely did notice some stronger peanut tastes in some bites which were excellent.
While this still doesn’t resemble real ice cream in texture down to a T, it’s gotten damn close. It’s even a lot closer than Halo Top, and 1000x closer than Arctic Zero. The calories are a bit higher in each pint with the Enlightened brand, but the 100-200 calories extra per pint are easily justified due to how insanely better the flavor is. The ice cream is a little bit better if you let it sit/melt a bit as it even tells you to do so on the label, but it doesn’t need near as long of sitting time as something like Arctic Zero does. I find Arctic Zero needs around 30-60 minutes of sitting out to find a more enjoyable texture, whereas Enlightened only takes about 15-30 minutes at most. You don’t want to let it sit too long either though, as after a certain threshold it passes the point of making the texture better and starts making it worse.
I really can’t explain to you how much I enjoyed the Enlightened peanut butter chocolate chip ice cream. Out of everything I’ve reviewed for this website, I can without a doubt say this is easily the best tasting one and my most recommended product when you combine the amazing nutritional profile with the incredible taste. It’s still hard for me to believe the fact that this particular flavor contained 20g of fiber and 32g of protein for only 400 calories in the whole pint, all the while tasting as amazing as it did. Absolutely crazy. It is a bit expensive at $5 per pint so it’s probably not something you’ll be able to eat everyday, but it is MORE than worth the cost every time you do get it. For reference, I found this at Hy-Vee in the normal ice cream section and not even the health section surprisingly enough. Stop reading this review and go to your nearest Hy-Vee to get this NOW. Thank me later. You’re welcome.
