I’m always happy to see Halo Top churn out some new flavors. I’m a huge fan of their products; the calories/macros are obviously INCREDIBLE for a whole pint of ice cream, and the taste is actually pretty solid as well. It’s not as good as regular, unhealthy ice cream, no, but we gotta be realistic here. For the amount of protein/fiber you’re getting and the calories you’re saving, the flavor is more than acceptable. The Halo Top Chocolate Mocha Chip is a new flavor that I didn’t even know existed until I unexpectedly came across it at Hy-Vee last week, so you can probably imagine my excitement. I’m still on the lookout for their infamous birthday cake flavor which I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about, but I’ll gladly take this one for now.
Halo Top Chocolate Mocha Chip Review
The top of the pint looks like their chocolate flavor; pretty basic and nothing too crazy going on here with appearance. The taste is largely reminiscent to their chocolate flavor as well, just with a hint of mocha naturally. The mocha flavor isn’t incredibly strong as I don’t taste much of a difference between this and their chocolate pint if I’m being completely honest, but it is slightly distinguishable and enough to affect the overall flavor. I will say the mocha ‘chips’ are kind of a disappoint though. I was expecting more of them first of all, and I was really hoping for an exaggerated crunch to them. To my dismay, not only are the mocha chips not very abundant in number, but the texture is really lacking as well. They don’t really have a crunch or real texture to them at all really, and sometimes I wouldn’t have even noticed I was eating one unless I felt the actual chip shape in my mouth. They don’t hurt the pint or the overall experience in any way and still do help to some degree, however they just weren’t executed nearly as well as they could have been in my opinion.
The Halo Top Chocolate Mocha Chip flavor totals out to 280 calories for the whole pint consisting of 24p/56c/10f in addition to 20g fiber. While the calories are still amazingly low for a pint of ice cream, this specific flavor is actually a little bit higher than most of their flavors considering they normally contain 240. I think the extra 40 calories is due to the inclusion of the mocha chips which didn’t really add much to the flavor unfortunately, but I can at least see where the extra 40 calories came from. I was always confused that their strawberry pint contained 280 calories compared to their vanilla bean/chocolate flavors (which contain 240) that were really no different besides the obvious flavor difference.
Once again, another success with the Halo Top Chocolate Mocha Chip flavor. In fact, this might even be my favorite flavor of theirs yet, though I still need to try their birthday cake pint. I felt the chocolate flavor was slightly elevated due to the minor mocha element added to it; it wasn’t much really but it was enough to give it the small edge over the original chocolate. The extra 40 calories are a bit of a downer for sure, but at 280 calories per pint it’s still lower than Enlightened and the chunky flavors of Arctic Zero. I give this two thumbs up and a definite recommendation.
+280 calories for the WHOLE PINT
+24g protein, 20g fiber for the whole pint
+Excellent chocolate taste with slight mocha undertones
-40 more calories compared to most other Halo Top flavors
-The mocha chips could be crunchier and more abundant; they don’t add too much
Overall Rating: A
